Happy Birthday to my pal Marcus, who moved back to Hamburg from SF recently, he is managing the Alessi store again, in case you visit.

My last visit to Hamburg was like the previous one, a late summer train from Liege to Cologne and direct to Hamburg just after the Belgian grand prix in Spa, which by the way had just followed too long obligatory visits to lovely people in the not so memorable sections of Lille, Dunkerque, Valenciennes, Epinal, etc. So a visit to sophisticated Hamburg is like a reviving leap into the future after the slightly anemic (but still enjoyable of course) NE France locales on my route.

My funny thing about Hamburg is I seem to always run into hookers in either unlikely sections of town, or simply with strange regularity. It's comical. The first Hamburg hooker I ever met gave me directions to a concert in 1994, I couldn't believe it, while it was clearly an overture, she was almost like a public servant. I actually haven't employed hookers, but by now it's a cliché with some of my friends that I'll have some sort of hooker sighting or unavoidable conversation. One gave me complements on a guy I was with, one gave me directions to Vuitton when I was cheeky enough to ask after complementing her shoes. That unusual encounter was similar to some of the mixing that goes on in SF at times.

Great energy in Hamburg with creative, spontaneous and curious people if you have someone to help make introductions. The publishing and music people I have met are quite happy to not leave. I would enjoy hearing from persons in the architecture, (residential or commercial) & design and product or industrial design realms simply for more up to date info on new works next time I visit. Or music and art afficionados with Hamburg ties as well. Just a culture vulture here....
